We have had a busy weekend. Over seventy visitors yesterday, but no so many today. In fact only about four showed up. Weather, again, played a big part. Mist and fog all day. No sun. But we were busy.
Jim Bennet and his son Dave along with Cyndy and her friend showed up early this morning ready to work. Cyndy and Diane took on painting of the public restroom while Jim, Dave and I worked on the lighthouse doors. The doors needed to be trimmed down so they would not stick. When it got wet outside they swelled and were hard to open since they are made of oak. Our job was to cut a little off and solve the problem.
Jim and Dave were the team that erected the doors in the first place and they know what they were doing. We removed one door and with the help of a guide, made a fine cut of about one eighth of an inch. Then we reinstalled the door and checked for fit. It fit great! Mission accomplished. Some touch up with varnish put the finishing touches on the job.
The restroom also looks good and was a job that had been on the list since the beginning. Mission also accomplished!
Jim also worked on grouting around the glass blocks in the lower lighthouse window. These had been previously grouted but they needed to be redone. There is growing concern about water intrusion in the light tower. Water is getting in and we have some ideas where it is coming from. Cracks between the granite blocks, window grout, and leakage around the steel cap at the top. Sometimes it blows pretty good up here and water seems to find a way in.
Brenda was busy on the guest side of the house painting trim and a second coat on the floor. We will move the small refrigerator and put the finishing touches on it tomorrow.
Remember the seal pup I mentioned a few days ago? One of our visitors said they saw a pup on the beach in the cove. When I went down later that day I didn’t see anything. Well, we now know the rest of the story. Apparently the pup was sick and died soon after it was seen. It got washed up on the beach and covered by the kelp. A visitor’s dog found the dead pup this weekend. One of our visitors borrowed a shovel and gave it a proper beach burial.
