Friday, July 31

First thing this morning the sun was shining and it was off to cutting grass and weed whacking again. I had every intention of going down the main trail to trim up for the weekend, but that was not to be. I went to the shop and completed some left over electric work, then put the finishing touches on a chart I was working on and then I began cutting the grass around the lighthouse. Actually I weed whacked first and then got on the riding mower.

Clouds were moving in throughout the morning and by 1300 the sky was completely overcast. Rain was on its way. As the sky grew darker I cut faster. Then the real rain came and I had to stop. I got done about half of the yard and the rest will have to wait for another day. Along with the trail.

Brenda busied herself with hanging curtains, installing rods, making beds and painting the bathroom floor. She wants everything just right for any guests that use the guest quarters. My brother and his family just confirmed that they are coming next week to spend a few days with us.

That’s great! Our first overnight visitors! And a chance to see our family! Mark and Donna will have their two boys in tow and I know they will enjoy the island.

This is the last day of July and I just heard that we are about to set a record for the wettest summer on record in Maine. They say we are only two inches away from the record. We got about an inch today and summer isn’t even half over. No doubt the record will be broken. Like I mentioned before, that is why the grass is still growing and green, and why I have to cut it every other day!

We just had dinner. Brenda took the lobster meat that I picked yesterday and made a delicious sandwich spread. We both agreed that we might like it even better this way. Raining again and the sun is going down. The sunset is amazing, varied pinks and reds with dark clouds forming a backdrop. Tomorrow should be a nice day if the old sailor’s adage is true. “Red sky in morning, sailor take warning. Red sky at night, sailors delight”

Some readers have asked why the dates at the top of each blog do not always agree. The answer is simply, communication. I use a WWAN card and connection to access the internet. The signal has to travel a couple of miles across the water and it isn’t always reliable. I do, religiously, write the blog each and every day, usually in the evening. Then I try to get on line and publish it. If I can’t connect, the blog does not publish and I have to wait until the next day. The blog site automatically inserts the date of publication. I manually insert the date I wrote it, and sometimes the dates don’t agree.

Hi Bill and Brenda,

We just found your blog and enjoy reading it because it reminds us of our time as caretakers last year on Seguin. It looks like you are getting lots done- rainy days help- and we look forward to stopping by in September. Enjoy the rest of the summer, maybe the grass will finally stop growing.
