Monday, August 3
Once again Monday was a day full of visitors. Early on four fishermen showed up. They pulled in to the cove to take a break from herring fishing, which takes place at night. They fish an area called the “kettle” which is about eight miles southwest of Seguin. They use a purse seine. They explained that the herring run best at night and that is when they fish. Last night they were not very successful and the ocean was rough so they decided to hold over at Seguin and fish again tonight.
Herring is the preferred bait for lobster and that is the market they are serving. Herring limits are set according to areas and once the annual limit is reached, fishing stops. This boat is out of South Bristol and has a hold capacity of fifty four thousand pounds of fish. That’s a lot of fish. But, of course, you have to catch them first. They stayed on their boat during the day and headed out to the fishing grounds around 1900.
We had some fog early, but by 1000 it was lifting and turned into a beautiful day. One of the best we have had. Warm enough for shorts and T shirts. And visitors showed up. The cove was full of boats, from large sail and power boats to kayaks and a canoe. The sea was calm today but I don’t think I would venture out here in an open canoe. Things can change pretty fast and I would not want to be in an open canoe if they did!
All seemed to be in good spirits and have a great time. Some brought blankets and had a picnic on the lawn, some played football and some hiked the trails. Most all wanted tours of the light and to see the museum. Some even went swimming in the cove. I went swimming in the cove yesterday. I didn’t plan it but I tripped getting out of the dingy and, PLOP, in I went. To my surprise it wasn’t that cold. In fact it was refreshing. Next time, however, I will wear my bathing suit.
Between talking with visitors and giving tours I cut grass again and Brenda used the last of the gray floor paint on the porch and giving the hallway a second coat. I swear if we were here long enough she would be painting the rocks! People are noticing and we get compliments on how the place looks every day.
Tomorrow my brother Mark and his family arrive. We will be meeting them ashore and they will be spending a couple of nights with us. It will be nice to have some company and see some family.
